Tourism System

The seemingly straightforward definition has created a great deal of debate, but let's look at a tourism system. A tourism system comprises a tourist, a traveller generating region, destination region and transit route for tourist. Using Nigeria as an example Destination regions would be cities, attraction etc that attracts tourist for example, Calabar, Jos, Obudu ranch, Yankari game reserve to mention a few whilst the traveller generating region would be the places where most of the tourists would come from, let's say Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
If we can have a system as explained above then it means we can start our campaign to reaping the benefits of tourism from within our country. In other words starting with domestic
tourist. Next we look at Domestic tourist.

The definition

Tourism is the activities of people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for leisure, business and other purpose not related to an activity to be paid for within the place visited. Place(s) visited could be domestic or international but stay should not be for more than a year. Countries the world over are reaping the benefits of tourism however bringing this definition to the Nigerian context, a country blessed with a plethora of tourist attractions but still Nigerians tend to travel mostly overseas and have contributed to tourism revenue of many Countries leaving the sector untapped in the country. Question is why do Nigerians tend to believe travel/vacation should be international and what are those that run the attractions doing.?
